Art History

Arthur Rackham was born in Lewisham, then still part of Kent as one of 12 children.  In 1884, he was sent on an ocean voyages to improve his fragile health. At the ages of 18, he began studying part-time at the Lambeth School Of Art. Arthur had an uncommon gift for art from a young age. As a child, he would often stay up late drawing by candlelight under the covers. Alice in Wonderland was among the books that most stirred his imagination. It took Edyth Starkie to encourage him to carry on with his watercolour work and to exhibit them at the Royal Watercolour Society.

Ernest Shepard was born the son of a architect, in London on December 10, 1879. As a child, Ernest had two big hobbies and drawing was one of them. He decided on a career as an artist and was encouraged by his father. After attending a special art school, he entered the Royal Academy School in 1897 as one of it's youngest students. Ernest  earned two scholarships while there. E.V. Lucas named Shepard when A.A.Milne asked him to recommend someone to illustrate some children's verses he would be publishing. At first Milne was not keen to use Shepard, but when his illustrations were a success Shepard went on to illustrate all of the Pooh books.
I really like his style of drawing because it is very original and recognisable. I find it interesting that most drawings around that area of time were simple yet affective.

Unit 1 And 2

Health and Safety
While processing into this project, I had to remember basic health and safety rules. Some of these rules were to not burn myself with the hot glue gun, make sure the hot glue do not drip on the table or anywhere else and make sure I do not leave it on when I am not using it.
Assessment Layout
These are my models and final pieces that I have made. I had to put my plaster cine final piece against the wall because it was breaking. I tried to fix it but it will have to make do. Overall, I am happy with all of the models that I have made in the unit.
Assessment Layout
Here is my best work pinned up ready for assessment. I am satisfied with the layout/ work picked out but I think it could be a lot better. I think it looks good for the first try of setting out my work.
 Second Final Outcome
This is my final outcome of my mask. I added lipstick, fake eye lashes and a tag that says "Am I pretty enough?". I wanted to add these features to make the mask pop out more while adding more of a story. I wanted to pose with the mask to see what it would look like and what it feels like to look through the eyes of an animal being tortured. It feels weird hearing people's comments about it and their reaction towards it because I don't get that same reaction since I'm the one who made it.

The overall outcome has came out really good. This is because it lives up to the expectation on reactions that I wanted to see/hear. I could see this mask in a anti-animal abuse charity or in a museum as a trophy/ collectors item. I am really glad that I managed to have time to do both ideas. This is because I am really passionate about this topic, I enjoyed creating both final outcomes and I managed to get the reaction off of people what I was intending to.
Second Final Outcome
I made a tiara using wire and craft material. I wanted to create a tiara because I want the mask to be a masquerade ball mask. This will represent how people are covering up the ugly truth of animal abuse.
Second Final Outcome
I have now added yellow and green paint on each ear. This represents hair dye and make-up colours. Next, I added red paint around the ears and the eyes to represent blood from being tortured.
Second Final Outcome
I mixed gold with brown paint to create a metallic/ fake tan look. I wanted to do this because many animals go through the torture of having lotions and face masks.
Second Final Outcome
I am happy with the outcome so far. This is because at the moment, it looks cute and innocent like every animal does. After I finished experimenting on it with fake tan, hair dye and adding blood on it with paint, it no longer will look innocent/ cute.
The dog I have chosen to do is a Beagle. This is because Beagles are active companions for kids and adults alike.Their noses guide them through life, and they’re never happier than when following an interesting scent. For this very reason, I made the nose inflamed from the amount of needles and experiments going in it. They are proud dogs and like many dogs, people abuse, use them for sports and breed them for money.
Second Final Outcome
I have got a week spear, so I am going to go forward and make my second idea come to life. Instead of created a rabbit, I am going to make a dog mask. This is because a dog is more of a family pet and it will be more effective to people. To create the mask, I started out going paper mashay over a balloon for the base of the head. For the ears, I wanted to do newspaper to get the correct shape before going over it with plaster bandage.
Development On Final Outcome
At this stage, I have now added the needle, some of the chains, clothes, a bear trap and a eye/ mouth mask. I had to add another piece of wire going through her because the plaster cine got too heavy. To cover it up, I wrapped chains around it. I think that it adds more effect and makes the chain look really heavy.
Development On Final Outcome
I am now thinking of adding more props around her. I am thinking of moving some nails to her knees, adding a needle in her ripped off arm and  a lot more chains around her neck and other parts of her body.
Development On Final Outcome
At this stage of my progress, I am having second thoughts on the pose. This is because it doesn't look effective enough. I wanted to add nails in her feet to add to the symphony and I added a weight on her ankle saying "Animal Right".
Development On Final Outcome
Now that I am happy with the position of the wire, I started added the plaster cine. I have close pink and white plaster cine. This is because it would be easier to see detail without everything blending in.
Final Outcome: Wire
I am now focusing on my final outcome of this unit. I am going with another wire/ plaster cine figure. This one will be bigger and will be in a different pose etc.

Experimentation On Barbie - Completed
I have now finished torturing Barbie. I  added a base, chopped of her hand and leg to use to hold a note and a necklace. Then I added purple paint to look like make-up and applied the chopped of hair to the base. First of all, I was going to have Barbie stood up but she wouldn't stand up. The overall layout of this experiment has came out nice and I like the placing of all the objects. Barbie laying down looks like she had just finished being operated on or put in the trash.
Review
After exploring this media, I no longer want to do this as my final piece. I am now thinking about creating it out of air clay, clay or plaster cine. This is because I think it doesn't express the feelings that I want to get across. The feelings I want to get across is fear, discomfort and making people think twice about what is going on in this world to animals. People pretend that they are not eating a real life animal, like that don't have a pulse just so that they do not feel guilty or being put off.

People also think that having a real fur coat/ fur rug is acceptable to have as a sign of wealth and success. What I want to accomplish with this project is to reach out and make at least 1 person realize what is going on and what they can do to help. Overall, I like how this has turned out and it has been a successful exploration towards my project.
Torturing Barbie
Moving my development on, I am now seeing if I can prove a point by torturing something that so many young children look up to. I have begun by cutting off some of her hair and tying it together with some loom bands. Then, I have cut off her hand and I am going to do the same with her leg too.

Finished!
This is the final outcome of my experimentation with plaster cine. I am really happy with the outcome and it came out like the image in my head. After creating the clothes, I added a blind fold, a mask around her mouth, wires that are attached to her, a chain around her foot and a note saying "animal rights". On top of her head, they are meant to be 3 signs of what animals are mostly killed for: sports, money and food. As it was too little space, I could not fit the writing on them.
Ideas For What Next
Developing my ideas next, I am thinking about experimenting on a Barbie doll. I want to torture it by cutting off her hair, cutting off her arm and leg and painting her gold. I want to paint her gold to represent all of the lotions and potions animals have been forced to have on them for our benefit.
For my final piece, I am thinking about creating a bigger model by using air dried clay. The scale will be a lot bigger so it impacts people a lot more. This allows me to add more detail to it as well.

Developing Characters Personality
I have now crafted out clothes. I tried to make the look tatty and slave like. The outcome of this has turned out better then expected so far because we had lack of tools for doing small details. I had to compromise and use my water bottle to roll out the plaster cine.

Developing Model
I have now created the pose that I want to work with. It took longer than I thought but I enjoyed working with it. After I was happy with the basic pose, I was thinking about what could be added to make it better. I started thinking of how this human could look like it was being experimented on and I wanted to add a personality to it.

Wire and plaster Cine
I am now going to make a model out of wire and plaster cine now. I found making the pose out of wire really difficult because it was thick wire, so it was hard to bend. In this picture, I was giving up hope a little bit because it wasn't going my way at all.

Experimenting: Human Figures
I am going to go with my design sheet 3 idea. Here, I am exploring a mixture of 3D materials. I like how the wood one has came out because it is simple but it really stands out. Playing around with these materials were the first time for me but I have enjoyed it a lot. The pose is meant to look like the person is in pain with a bent back. Other people in my class has commented on these and have told me they like them and that they capture the pose well.

Henry Spencer Moore
Henry Spencer Moore was born in Castleford, Yorkshire, England in 1898. He was a teacher and served in the army before going to Leeds School Of Arts. This is so he could learn to become a sculptor. Most of his sculptures are female figures, some are families and some are faces. During the World War 2, he was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee to make drawings of London's Civilians using underground stations as bomb shelters. He died in 1986 and was buried only a few hundred yards from his home
Research: Soviet Monuments
After the fall of the Soviet Union, many Communist statues and sculptures were destroyed. Others were moved to statue parks or museums. Many of them remained in the same place for the last 20 years, while the former  Soviet areas were transformed into modern countries.
Monument to the Revolution of the people of Monslavina, Pofgaric, Croatia. It is dedicated to the people of Moslavine during WWII. The memorial was designed by Dusan Dzamonja in 1967.
My Opinion And Thoughts
I find Soviet Monuments breath taking because of the scale of the sculptures. This gave me a possible idea about creating a sculpture of a human being experimented on for my project.
Exploring Materials
I am now playing around with some plaster cine and wire. I enjoyed exploring this media because it is out of my comfort zone and I haven't explored it before. My idea was to do a hanging human to represent what humans do to animals (e.g. pigs). The outcome of it came out good since it was my first time exploring.
Exploring Materials
We were told to do small 3D models that are made out of paper and that are linked into our ideas. I chosen to do a bunch mini paper people trapped in a cage. I wanted to explore paper this way because origami wasn't working for me, so I approached this activity in a different way.
Presentation Feedback!
I had to present my 3 design sheets to the class to see what ideas I have for the Anthropocene project. The feedback that I got back was really positive and a lot of people seemed to prefer idea 2 and 3 more than idea 1. I agree with them because they are a lot more effective and seems more developed. Some other feedback that I have got were that my design sheets were easy to understand and it gets to the point.
Anthropocene: Third Idea
With this ides, I wanted to create something completely different to the other ideas. This idea is inspired by Jacqueline Traide. Her act towards animal rights/ abuse means a lot to me and it gave me the inspiration to show what it would be like for a human to be experimented on instead of animals. I want to use a Barbie doll to experiment on and make little props to go with it.
Research: Jacqueline Traide - Age 24
Jacqueline went through a 10 hour torture performance in a shop window in LUSH. First, they stretched her mouth open with two metal hooks that were attached to a strap around her head. The man then grabbed her hair and tugged it until tilted backwards. He then poured
cosmetic chemicals into her eyes. By the time her finished spooning food down her throat, she was chocking gagging and trying to break free. She was given injections, had her skin abraded and was smothered in lotions/ potions. Finally, she then endured having a strip of her hair shaved off in front of the horrified crowd.

I think she is amazing and is someone to look up to. When she was in pain, forced fed and crying, she could of stopped this life performance at any moment. She chose not to because this is what animals goes though every single day. They are just being experimented on like an non living object that has no feelings or a heart. In my opinion if LUSH can stock up on non-animal experimented on items, why can't the other company's?  The other question is why would they want animals to be experimented on if there is a option not to?
Anthropocene: Second Idea
My second idea was based on animals being experimented on for cosmetics and medicine. I wanted to created a mask ,made out of paper ma-shay, to represent the pain and suffering animals goes through to make people look and feel "pretty". It is meant to look like a masquerade ball mask.
I like this idea more because it captures the viewers emotions more and it is more effective.
First Week Back: First Idea
We are now focusing on a new brief all about Anthropocene/Vanitas. I wanted to focus on animal abuse, This is because over 100 million animals get killed each year by humans in one way or another. There are many ways humans kills animals for such as food, money, fur, sports, trophies and more.
After my research, I had a lot of ideas on what to do but just didn't know how to put the ideas on paper. I decided to do more than 2 design sheets to develop my top 3 ideas. My first idea is about animal's habitat, before and after. I was thinking about how animals live before forest fires, earthquake and tornadoes. These natural disasters are mainly caused by pollution. My idea was using cardboard boxes and creating two scenes out of cut out layers of paper.

On top of the boxes, there are people finally shown the truth. On the first box (natural habitat), there are cracks on top. People are noticing the cracks that are appearing but do not care at all. This represents the government pretending that every thing is going to be ok and like nothing is happening.  On the other side of the box (where people are burning down forests, killing animals for profit and for food), the cracks has fallen though and everyone have seen the truth behind the lies.
Review
I am happy with the way the ink has turned out. Every print will always turn out unexpectedly no matter how much you plan/ try to control it. This is why I like any kind of printing. This is because I think the unexpected is an art in its own. Exploring different colours is all apart of the fun and I enjoyed learning how much ink to put on (e.g. if it's too much or too little).

Lino Cutting
This week, we are focusing on lino cutting. I was planning on doing two Lino stencils but there was no Lino left. We had to scale down a drawing in our book to A5, trace it and print it onto the lino. The drawing I wanted to trace is the cat skull. This is because it is simple yet effective. Carving into the lino was more easier than expected. It was pretty easy controlling where I wanted to carve out the lines.  Here are some of the prints that I have made:
Experimenting With Watercolours
I wanted to create a small mixed media piece featuring ink with watercolours. Linking back to the found objects in my previous project, I wanted to ink a cat skull. This is because I thought it would be fun to experiment drawing an animal skull instead of a human skull. The way this picture has turned out is really nice. The watercolours are blended in together in the middle of the page while I used a straw to blow the paint towards the centre.
Outcome
The outcome of this has came out good in my opinion. The screen that my print was on had less designs on then the other screen. I prefer less designs because they do not over power each other.
More Screen Printing
We had to create a 10 by 10cm line art design to create a class design. I wanted to use my pattern horse because I know it would stand out.
Screen printing: Stencil!
I managed to peel the stencil off afterwards and this was the outcome. It is really colourful and it would look nice on a birthday card. I like how colourful it has turned out too.
Review
The overall experience with screen printing was interesting and fun, but a long process. I had great fun using the jet wash to wash off the ink off of the screen afterwards! My opinion on the way my prints has turned out is good but could be better. I think it could of been better by making sure that the screen doesn't move while applying the ink. If i would do this again, I would create an animal pattern stencil that would link more into the work that I am doing at the moment.
Screen printing
This is my third print. I added a little more ink to this one to stop the inks mixing together too much. This is my favorite one because I love how it looks like fabric. It makes you just want to touch it! I love how the colours turned out and the the screen didn't move, so the print came out perfect.
Screen printing
This was the second print. The screen ended up moving which effected the print. Although it moved, I like the outcome. This is because it looks like it came from a dream world and it is distorted.  The colours were starting to get muddy now.
Screen printing
Here are my prints that I have created from my stencil. First of all, I wanted to create a vibrant, rainbow coloured print. The print came out bright, just the way that I it wanted to.
Screen printing
Attaching my stencil to the screen was more difficult then normal. This is because it is meant to be attached to the whole paper. To get around this I had to use masking tape, turn it into double sided and attach it to the screen like that. I then had to use strips of tape to create a border. With the writing and music note, I had to remember to turn it the other way round so the writing doesn't turn back to front when I turn the screen over.
Mono Screen Printing
Today, we had to make a stencil for the mono screen print. I wanted to link it into what I am into and that is anime/manga and music, The way this has came out wasn't really planned, apart from the main outlines. I think it has came out really good comparison to how hard it was to cut out the shapes without ripping the paper.
 Final Try
I like how the final print has came out. Spreading them out wasn't looking right to me, so I wanted to put them in the middle of the paper to see if it would work. The only negative is that the heart blends in too much with the green bubble wrap. The black butterfly really makes the picture stand out though.
Review
I think the overall experience was really fun and it makes you think of the best possible way(s) to layout multiple objects. I am glad that my progression in these prints turned out better for each one. What I would do differently is make sure I know what colour I am going to do for each object, add more objects to each print and make sure there are not two of the same colour per print.
Second Try
I'm not a massive fan of the way this has turned out because I don't really like the layout. Here, I am experimenting more with the colours and how I can make them work together.
Print Making
This week, we were focusing on print making. I have done this picture by inking up found objects and putting them through a press. I think this came out pretty good for my first try. The layout makes the objects looks more random, which I like.
Finished Piece
I am happy with the final piece because I think it represent Arnos Vale a lot. This is because it looks peaceful, full of nature and it's happy/sad at the same time.
Adding Nature
I wanted to add leafs because they represent life and death. Arnos vale also was covered in lots of trees and bushes.

Mixed media: Arnos Vale Cemetery
We are focusing on mixed media and landscapes this week. I have chosen Arnos Vale because I felt really at piece there with all the nature. It made me feel free walking around the area.
An Iceberg Of External/ Internal Feelings
Today, we were told to do an abstract drawing of feelings and the experience of a certain place. I wanted to do an iceberg because so many people suffer from mental health and have experienced these thoughts at least once in their life. I am happy with the way this has turned out because I think it explains what people see/ what you bottle up inside very well.
Experimenting Colours On The Colour Wheel
It was really hard blending these two colours together because they're not meant to be blended. I think it came out ok because they are both really strong colours.
Life Drawing
I wanted to practice my still life drawing and decided to set up a couple of objects. Keeping it black and white brings out the small detail to the line art. I like how this drawing has turned out because it's simple but detailed at the same time. With the shadows, I tried to just block in the main bits and try not to over do it.
